What to Wear Ziplining in Costa Rica: Complete Packing Guide
One of the most common questions we get from guests is "What should I wear for my zipline tour?" It's a great question — the right outfit can make the difference between a comfortable adventure and an uncomfortable one. Here's your complete guide.
Footwear: The Most Important Choice
DO Wear
- Closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking shoes
- Trail running shoes with good grip
- Lightweight hiking boots
DON'T Wear
- Sandals or flip-flops (you will not be allowed to participate)
- High heels or dress shoes
- Brand new shoes that haven't been broken in
- Shoes with no tread
Your shoes are the most critical piece of your zipline outfit. You'll be walking on uneven terrain, climbing stairs to platforms, and landing on wooden decks. Good grip and ankle support are essential.
Clothing Recommendations
Upper Body
- Lightweight, moisture-wicking t-shirt — cotton works but dries slowly
- Athletic or quick-dry fabric is ideal
- Avoid loose or baggy shirts that could get caught in equipment
- Long sleeves optional — they can protect from sun and minor scratches
Lower Body
- Shorts or lightweight pants — both work well
- Athletic shorts with pockets are a popular choice
- Avoid skirts or dresses — the harness goes around your legs
- Quick-dry material is best, especially in green season
What About Jeans?
Jeans are technically fine but not recommended. They're heavy, hot in Costa Rica's tropical climate, and uncomfortable when wet. Lightweight pants or shorts are much better choices.
Accessories and Gear
Sunglasses
Bring them but make sure they have a secure strap. You don't want to lose your favorite sunglasses from 100 feet up!
Hats
A baseball cap or sun hat can be worn under your helmet. Avoid wide-brimmed hats that won't fit under the helmet.
Jewelry
Remove all dangling jewelry before your tour. Necklaces, bracelets, and large earrings can get caught in equipment. Simple stud earrings and wedding bands are fine.
Hair
If you have long hair, tie it back in a ponytail or braid. This keeps it out of your face and prevents it from getting tangled in equipment.
What to Bring in Your Pockets
Keep it minimal:
- Sunscreen (apply before the tour)
- Insect repellent (apply before the tour)
- A small amount of cash for tips
- Phone in a zippered pocket or secured case
Camera and Phone Tips
Many guests want to capture their zipline experience. Here are our recommendations:
- GoPro with chest or head mount — the best option for hands-free video
- Phone with a secure wrist strap — acceptable but risky
- Leave the DSLR behind — too bulky and risky to carry while ziplining
We recommend securing any device with a strap. If you drop your phone from the canopy, it's gone!
Weather-Specific Tips
Dry Season (December - April)
- Lighter clothing is fine
- Extra sunscreen is a must
- Sunglasses recommended
Green Season (May - November)
- Quick-dry clothing is essential
- A light rain jacket can be helpful
- Waterproof phone case recommended
The Bottom Line
Keep it simple: closed-toe shoes, comfortable athletic clothing, and minimal accessories. You'll be provided with all safety equipment including harness and helmet. Just show up ready for adventure!
